Clara (Wieck) Schumann, born 200 years ago this year, was an extraordinary figure: overshadowed in the history books by her husband Robert, but in reality a musical powerhouse in her own right. An inspired composer, brilliant and famous pianist, muse to Brahms and others, and mother of eight children, she led a long, complex and fascinating life.

Clara Schumann: A Life in Music. Natasha Loges introduces this pioneering musician: her life, music and influences. The talk is illustrated with songs performed by baritone James Atkinson and pianist Brian Hughes, outstanding students of the Royal College of Music.

Rediscovering Clara Schumann. Natasha Loges is joined by Joe Davies (Oxford University), Laura Hamer (Open University) andJessy McCabe (Oxford University) for a discussion of Clara Wieck-Schumann’s vital position in the history of female musicians.
