The archive of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, preserves the archival documents on the history of the university. The approximately 5000 meters of shelf comprehensive inventory goes back to the founding of the University in 1548. In 1947, the archives of the university faculties and registries of the university administration were merged into a central archive.

This included the holdings of the university's main archive (Rector and the Senate), the faculties’ archives (Theology, Law, Philosophy and Faculty of Medicine), the archives of the University Retirement Office (1817-1950) and the Archive of the University curator (1819-1949). They now form an integral part of the final archive.

The records of Robert Schumann's promotion are delivered on file in the Faculty of Arts (UAJ, inventory M) and regarding the Rector and Senate (UAJ, BA stock). The documents on the residence of the two sons of Schumann, Ludwig and Ferdinand, inheard in the Stoy educational institute belongs to the provenience Educational Seminar (UAJ, Dept. S I). Some of the documents were published in the volume: Der „akademische“ Schumann und die Jenaer Promotion von 1840. Edited by J. Bauer/ J. Blecher, Leipzig 2010
